You are here : Memorial / Mahathir Mohamad's Birthplace

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, was born on 20 December 1925 at No 28, Lorong Kilang Ais, Jalan Pegawai, Alor Star, Kedah. The wooden house with a nipah roof was bought by his father, Mohamad bin Iskandar, from a vendor who was marrying off his daughter at that time. At the time of purchase, the house was not painted and had only one room; while it had a verandah, it had no steps in the front. Tun Mahathir was brought up in this house and lived here until he got married, after which he moved to his own house in Titi Gajah but continued to visit his parents here.

It was the Kedah State Museum Board which proposed the restoration of the house; but at a meeting on 21 August 1990, the board decided that the house be made the responsibility of the National Archives to preserve it under the Prime Minister's Archive Project. The board had obtained a written permission dated 29 June 1990 from Tun Dr Mahathir and his family to restore the house. The National Archives then acquired the house in May 1993 and undertook to preserve it for its historical value.

The exhibition is divided into two sections:

  1. Interior
  2. Exterio
