THE PROCLAMATION OF INDEPENDENCE MEMORIAL

The exhibits are displayed according to sectors so visitors may easily follow the struggle for independence. The sectors are: 'Introduction and Malay Supremacy', 'Facing the Challenge of Foreign Powers', 'The Rise of Nationalism', 'Opposing the Malayan Union', 'The United Malay National Organisation', 'Facing the Communist Threat', 'The Road to Independence', 'Independence', 'Constitutional Monarchy', 'Heads of State and Government', and 'The Formation of Malaysia'. The 1957 Merdeka car as well as two armoured cars used during the Emergency are also on exhibit outside the memorial building.

The memorial is sited in a building previously known as the Malacca Club, which was built around 1911 and features a mix of local and British architecture. The building was chosen because it is in front of the Padang Bandar Hilir, which was where the Tunku proclaimed the date of independence upon the return of the Independence entourage from London. This event on 20 February 1956 was a momentous occasion in the country's fight for independence.
